Many Map360 users create accurate diagrams with vehicle positions then use various simulation programs to simulate and animate their scene. This article will walk you through the workflow to reconstruct the scene from point cloud data in Map360 so you can easily import your DXF into Virtual CRASH 4 to simulating the involved vehicles travel paths.
Map360 can import scanned data in various formats and can easily handle projects with billions of points.
A roadway was scanned with a Leica Pegasus mobile scanner and imported as a Cyclone point cloud.
To import a Cyclone point cloud, select the "Import Cyclone” button and pick on “…” to browse to your database. Expand the directory tree and browse to the Model Space view.
The point cloud is highly detailed and preservers the evidence from the scene.
This is a very large scene, so we will use the clipping tools to hide points we will not be working with. The points can be turned back on from the Clipping Manager.
When exporting as a .dxf to import into Virtual CRASH 4, use a basic polyline or line to map your scene. Make sure your node/point snapping is turned on, select polyline or line from the Draw ribbon and map the roadway lines snapping to points in the point cloud.
Once the linework is drawn, we can turn the point cloud visibility off to clearly see the roadway lines.
At this stage, the basic drawing of the roadway is complete, and we can use other features in Map360 to add detail to the diagram and create a stunning deliverable.
For example, we can add hatching, vehicle symbols, and labels.
The vehicle symbols were placed on the roadway at their impact positions based on an initial analysis completed using the Scene Analysis tools in Map360. The following was determined:
A t-bone collision occurred within the intersection, involving two passenger vehicles. A blue Chevrolet Camero was traveling eastbound when it collided with a red Volvo 900 series traveling northbound.
The Camero's pre-impact travel path was approximately 38.6 m long. The Camero traveled at a constant 60 km/h for 1.2 seconds covering 20 m. The Camero then decelerated at 0.7 g's over the remaining 18.6 m to an impact speed of 17 km/h.
The Volvo's travel path was approximately 12.6 m long. The Volvo accelerated at a rate of 0.3 g's from a stop to a final impact speed of 31 km/h.
The scene was exported as a *.DXF file by using the Save As and selecting a DXF format.
Virtual CRASH 4 imports the *.DXF file with the provided point cloud to simulate the involved vehicles travel paths.
A final animation of the crash was created in Virtual CRASH 4.
